Our Musical Journey
Fret & Fire is a passionate folk duo made up of Kevin Fristad and Michael Laslett. Together, they create heartfelt songs that emphasize social justice and encourage communal singing. Their music serves as a platform for advocacy and resistance, aiming to inspire audiences while fostering a sense of togetherness. The duo's name embodies their devotion to music and their unwavering commitment to social causes that matter. Join them as they use their melodies to shape a more just world.
Kevin's musical journey began in childhood, shaped by early piano lessons, singing hymns in church, and the golden age of television variety shows.
Inspired by folk legends like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, The Carter Family, Utah Phillips, and Bob Dylan, he eventually began writing his own songs, weaving stories of humanity, humor, and heart.
After returning to music in retirement with fresh energy and purpose, he threw himself back into performing, incorporating not only guitar, but other instruments, including the mountain dulcimer, the autoharp, and the harmonica.
Today Kevin's music centers on timeless themes of freedom, hope, and the enduring struggle of the powerless — songs that reflect, resist, and inspire.

Michael has a beautiful voice and guitar style that is equally suited to love songs, ballads, sing-a-longs and social justice anthems.
He has performed around the country at music festivals and countless union meetings, picket lines and social justice events.
As a founding member of the Seattle Labor Chorus, Michael has shared the stage with folk luminaries such as Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, John McCutcheon, Charlie King, Si Kahn, Rebel Voices and Linda Allen.
He was a full-time union organizer for 37 years before retiring in 2024.
Fret & Fire’s music resonates deeply with those who yearn for change. Their powerful lyrics, combined with engaging melodies, create an atmosphere that invites listeners to join in and rally for justice. This duo truly believes that music can be a catalyst for social transformation, encouraging everyone to sing along and stand united.
